Although hair loss in men is a fairly common occurrence, most men feel embarrassed and insecure when their hair begins to thin. As such, they seek out any possible method for restoring their once magnificent mane of hair. With so many products available to help combat hair loss in men, it can be somewhat difficult to determine which is the right method to follow.

Combating Hair Loss in Men with Topical Solutions

In 1988, the FDA approved Minoxidil for helping to fight hair loss in men. This medication has been clinically proven to help slow down hair loss or to even help regrow hair in some cases. Unfortunately, it has also been shown to have little effect on hair loss within the frontal portion of the scalp – which is where hair loss from male pattern baldness occurs. In addition, in order to maintain the hair that has been grown as the result of Minoxidil, which is most commonly known by the brand name of Rogaine, the man cannot stop using the product.

Combating Hair Loss in Men with a Pill

By 1997, a new hair loss medicine was introduced by the name of Finasteride, which is most commonly known by the brand name of Propecia. This medication is an antiandrogen that inhibits the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT. Clinical studies have shown that about half of the men using Propecia experience some hair regrowth and about half stop experiencing hair loss when using the medication.

Unfortunately, there have been concerns regarding the possible long term effects of using medications such as Propecia. In addition, there has been some evidence that men who develop prostate while taking these medications are more likely to have high grade cancers, which means they will spread more quickly. Another disadvantage to Propecia is, like Rogaine and other topical treatments, it must be continuously used for an entire lifetime in order to maintain the effects.

Combating Hair Loss in Men with Hair Transplants

To date, the most effective means for combating hair loss in men has been hair transplants. Hair transplants are proven to be safe with no longterm side effects. Although it is possible to experience an infection following the hair transplant surgery, this is easily treated with antibiotics and avoidable if proper post-surgery procedures are followed. In addition, the effects of hair transplants are lifelong, as healthy hair follicles are moved from one area of the scalp to another. As such, there is no need to continually spend money on a medication or risk long term health problems as with other hair loss treatment procedures.
