Although most people think of men when they think of baldness, hair loss in women is actually a fairly common phenomenon. For a woman that is experiencing hair loss, there are a number of different steps she can take to help combat the problem and maintain a healthier head of hair.

Combating Hair Loss in Women with Hair Growth Stimulators

One well known way for combating hair loss in women is with the help of hair growth stimulators such as Rogaine. While Rogaine can be purchased without a prescription, it does not work for all women. Much of whether or not the stimulator will help combat hair loss in women depends upon the type of baldness she is experiencing. Similarly, once the woman stops using the hair growth stimulator, any positive effects of the stimulator that she may have received will be lost.

Combating Hair Loss in Women With Antiadrogens

Antiadrogens help to block the androgen receptors in the body, which helps to prevent hair from getting lost. One of the first antiandrogen medications to be used to treat hair loss was actually in the form of a contraceptive that was later found to assist with hair loss. Although antiadrogens have been shown to be effective at treating and preventing hair loss in women, there are side effects that a woman may experience from taking prescription antiandrogen medications. These include high blood pressure, diarrhea, and even liver problems.

Combating Hair Loss in Women with Alternative Therapies

For those women interested in combating hair loss with natural, alternative forms of treatment, there is some evidence that drinking green tea can assist with preventing hair loss. This appears to be because of the antiandrogenic properties of the catechins of the tea.

Combating Hair Loss in Women with Hair Transplants

For the best results and for the fullest looking head of hair, most women experiencing hair loss turn to hair transplants. With hair transplants like what’s available from Bosley Hair, healthy hair follicles from various points on the scalp are removed and placed in the area where hair loss has occurred. This allows the thinning area of the head to appear fuller without sacrificing the appearance of the rest of the hair. This is the more desirable option for most women because the results are generally permanent and allows for the quickest method for restoring a luxurious head of hair.

When it comes to hair replacement surgery, most people take for granted that it is so readily available and easy to do. Yet, the reality is that it took many years of hard work to get the procedure to the point that it is at today. Here’s a look at the history behind hair replacement surgery and how it got to where we know it today.

Unfortunately for many men who were dealing with hair loss, there didn’t used to be many options available. Topical creams were among the first hair restoration options available, but these products only work on some people and are only effective when used on certain parts of the head. In fact, these products were virtually ineffective on the top of the head, which is the most problematic area for most men. Furthermore, in order to continue to enjoy the results, men had to use the product for the rest of their lives.

Doctors also developed medicines to help restore hair, but these drugs were also no longer effective once the patient stopped using them. Furthermore, while the drugs had been approved by the FDA, concerns regarding the safety and long term effects of using these drugs began to develop. In response to the problems associated with these treatment options, Dr. L. Lee Bosley began to look for an alternative.

For Bosley, the history behind hair replacement surgery dates all the way back to before 1974. It was at this time that the hair restoration professionals began performing hair restoration on a regular basis. Of course, it took years of hard work and experimentation before it got to that point, after which the Bosley team worked diligently toward perfecting the technique.

After the Bosley team started to perform hair transplants on a full-time basis, it didn’t take long for the procedure to explode across all 50 states and 67 countries. Since then, the Bosley team has continued to work toward improving the technique and creating innovative products and methods for improving results. In fact, Bosley has developed nearly every hair restoration advancement made in the industry over the past 30 years.

In addition to pushing the industry to the next level, Bosley also places an emphasis on physician training. By requiring every doctor to be Board certified or credentialed in at least one dermatologic or surgical specialty area, all physicians must be licensed in their state and must have at least 10 years of experience.

One thing is true when it comes to baldness: men have been combating the problem for decades. In response to the demand for a way to restore hair, a number of products have been developed over the last several years. For most men, however, a hair transplant is the solution that makes the most sense. Not only does a hair transplant provide long-term effects, but there are no side effects and there is no need to continue to use any special products or medication in order to maintain the results.

In 1988, one of the first products to help men address their hair loss was put on the market. This product, Minoxidil, was a medication that had been clinically proven to slow the hair loss process and to even reverse the loss in some men. The product did very little to address hair loss at the front of the scalp, however, and men had to use the product for the rest of their lives if they wanted to continue to enjoy the results.

About 9 years later, Finasteride hit the market. This hair loss medicine converted testosterone to DHT, which helped about 50 percent of men regrow their hair. About the same percentage of men stopped experiencing hair loss when they used the medication. Unfortunately, some potentially dangerous side effects were ultimately discovered with the medication and, like Minoxidil, the effects of the medication discontinued when it was no longer used.

The good news for men who are experiencing hair loss is that hair transplant surgery does not have any side effects and has been found to provide long-term effects. For this reason, it is a popular choice among men who do not wish to use a long-term medication and who want to enjoy guaranteed results. In fact, the procedure is so safe and so highly regarded that has become a very common procedure among balding men. Even a number of celebrities have chosen to get hair transplants. Some celebrity men who are said to have obtained hair transplants include Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn, Nick Lachey, Wade Boggs, Sylvester Stallone and Kevin James.

The bottom line is that hair transplants are growing increasingly common among men who are bald or who are simply dealing with thinning hair. Chances are that you know someone who has received a hair transplant and you don’t even know it. To find out if hair transplantation is right for you, contact a Bosley specialist today!

There is no doubt about it – losing your hair is a very depressing situation. For many men, losing hair is not just about losing hold of their youth, but it also takes its toll on their self-esteem and confidence. Thankfully, balding men no longer have to live their lives without hair. In fact, today’s man can just say no to baldness by using Bosley hair transplant surgery.

Thanks to the simple yet effective Bosley hair transplant procedure, thousands of men who were once bald or balding are now able to enjoy looking in the mirror and seeing a full head of hair. Furthermore, for most of these men, the transplant procedure offers a permanent solution that does not require any special type of maintenance. This is because the procedure involves removing healthy hair follicles form the patient and simply moving them to another place on the head. These healthy follicles then continue to grow hair just as they would have done if they had not been moved. This is made possible with a simple 5-step procedure:

Apply local anesthesia to the area

Trim and remove the hairs that are to be transplanted

Dissect and separate the follicles

Make small incisions where the follicles are to be placed

Insert the donor follicles into the area that has been prepared

While the patient will have to wait for about 10 days before the sutures from the procedure can be removed, there are no special instructions for caring for the hair after the scalp has healed. Unlike medicines and shampoos, which must be used continually in order for the results to remain, no additional treatment is necessary after getting a hair transplant. Similarly, a hair transplant is different from a hairpiece because it looks natural and it does not require any special care or placement. Rather, the patient simply washes and styles his hair just as he normally would.

Thanks to the advancements in hair transplantation that Bosley has made, there really is no reason for any man to live with his baldness. The hair transplant procedure is safe, effective and offers long-term results. If you are ready to say no to baldness, why not give Bosley a call? You can enjoy a free consultation, where you can learn more about the procedure while also learning whether or not you are a good candidate for a hair transplant. You have nothing to lose and only hair to gain!

Are you planning to meet with a hair transplant physician sometime soon? If you have a meeting planned with a hair replacement surgeon, coming prepared with the right questions is essential to getting the most out of your appointment. Not only will your questions help you determine if the procedure is right for you, but it will also help you determine if the physician will be able to provide the results you are looking for. As such, here is a list of the top five questions to ask your hair replacement surgeon.

Question #1: Do You Take a Holistic Approach to Hair Restoration?

When it comes to restoring your hair, it is essential that the physician take a holistic approach that considers why your hair loss occurred in the first place. By determining how the hair loss occurred, the physician will be better capable of determining whether or not you are truly a good candidate for the procedure.

Question #2: What Kind of Experience Do You Have?

Clearly, you want a physician who has plenty of experience with hair replacement surgery. After all, the more experience the physician has with this type of procedure, the more likely he or she will be able to create a natural look for you and your hair. Every surgeon who works for Bosley has at least 10 years of experience in private practice, so you can be sure your physician is quite experienced when you choose Bosley for your hair transplant surgery.

Question #3: What are Your Credentials?

While hair restoration is not a life or death procedure, you certainly want to find someone who has the scientific knowledge and artistic talent to create a natural look. While the physician’s credentials do not offer a guarantee that he or she will have the skills you are looking for, it will give you much better idea. Every Bosley physician is licensed in the state where he or she practices and is either Board certified or credentialed in at least one surgical or dermatologic specialty area.

Question #4: Do You Do Anything Other Than Hair Transplant Procedures?

Some hair transplant physicians perform a variety of different cosmetic procedures rather than specializing. To ensure you get the best results possible, it is best to stick with a surgeon who specializes in hair transplants only.

Question #5: Can I View Samples of Your Work?

When meeting with the physician you should ask him or her to provide you with samples of work that he or she has completed. Be very specific in asking for before and after pictures of that physician’s patients. That way, you can get a much better idea of the kind of results you can expect to achieve.

Hair Transplant Options

Facing hair loss is a troubling situation for both men and women. With so many different hair restoration options available, it can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming to determine which ones to use. In addition, while there are many hair restoration options on the market, not all of them are actually capable of restoring hair. On the other hand, some hair restoration options do help restore hair but not in the area where the person might need hair to grow.

Topical Hair Restoration Options

Currently, there is only one topical hair restoration option available on the market. This hair restoration option is known commercially as Rogaine and is marketed toward men and women. While Rogaine has been proven to be effective at restoring hair and preventing hair loss in some cases, it does not treat hair loss in the most problematic area for men – the top of the head. Therefore, Rogaine is not a good hair restoration option for most men. In addition, Rogaine must be used continuously or its effects will be lost.

Medicinal Hair Restoration Options

Another hair restoration option is known by the brand name of Propecia. This hair restoration option is in the form of a pill that must be taken for the rest of the person’s life in order to continue to keep the hair that is restored. While Propecia has been approved by the FDA, there is some concern about the potential long term side effects from taking Propecia for a long period of time.

Transplant Hair Restoration Options

For many, the best hair restoration option is to have a hair transplant performed. With a hair transplant, donor hairs are removed from one area of the patient’s scalp and placed on the part of the scalp that is balding. These donor hairs are carefully selected as the ones that are most likely to continue growing even as the patient gets older. Therefore, once a hair transplant is completed, there is no need to take any medication or use any special creams – the hair is there for good. Companies such as Bosley have an outstanding reputation for completing this hair restoration procedure and obtaining natural looking results.

Aside from these three hair restoration options, there are no other medically-proven methods for treatment of hair loss. Some believe that drinking green tea can assist in preventing hair loss, but this claim is still unsubstantiated. Of course, there is also always the option of using a wig or other hair replacement system, but most find hair transplants to be the best hair restoration option for them.

Causes of Hair Loss

A number of factors can cause hair loss to occur, though the most common cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness in men and female pattern baldness in women. This is sometimes also referred to as permanent pattern baldness or simply as common baldness. In both cases, the cause is a genetic trait that has caused certain hair follicles to respond in a negative fashion to hormones within the body.

A Closer Look at Male Pattern Baldness

Since male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss, many people are already familiar with the term. Many men suffering from male pattern baldness begin experiencing hair loss at an early age. As they grow older, the extent of the hair loss increases. In the majority of cases, this results in a receding hairline and ultimately baldness on the top of the head.

Digging Deeper Into Female Pattern Baldness

Although female pattern baldness also has a genetic link, the hair loss pattern is typically somewhat different than it is in men. With female pattern baldness, the hair generally becomes thin over the entire scalp.

Medical Causes of Hair Loss

In addition to genetically linked causes of hair loss, a person may also experience hair loss for a variety of medical reasons. For example, a person may experience hair loss approximately three to four months after undergoing major surgery or after experiencing an illness. Fortunately, this form of hair loss is usually temporary and is related to stress.

Hormonal issues can also lead to hair loss. If a person’s thyroid is overactive or underactive, hair loss may occur. In this case, treatment of the disease can help treat the hair loss problem. Similarly, an imbalance of female and male hormones can also lead to hair loss. It is also possible to treat this form of hair loss if the imbalance is corrected.

In many cases, women who have given birth also experience hair loss approximately three months after the baby is born. This is also related to hormones and will generally correct itself as the woman’s hormones get back to their normal cycle.

It is also possible to experience hair loss as a result of taking certain medications. Medications that can lead to hair loss include blood thinners, medicines used during chemotherapy when treating cancer, medicines used to treat gout, taking too much Vitamin A, antidepressants, and birth control pills. When these medications are no longer used, hair growth usually returns to normal.

Skin diseases such as Alopecia areata can also lead to hair loss, as can psychological disorders such as Trichotillomania. With Trichotillomania, the patient repeatedly pulls out his or her hair, leaving behind bald patches and damaged hair.

The True Causes of Hair Loss

With so many people, both male and female, dealing with hair loss, it is easy to understand why so many myths about hair loss abound. Perhaps one of the most widespread myths about hair loss is that the genetic predisposition to baldness is inherited from the maternal grandfather. While this was once believed to be true, more extensive research has demonstrated that it is possible to experience hair loss even if your mother’s father had a full head of hair. Similarly, just because your mother’s father was bald, it does not guarantee you will experience hair loss as well.

Some other myths about hair loss are not as scientifically grounded as this myth. For example, some have said that having a cow lick the top of a person’s head will help prevent him or her from going bald. Or, rubbing curry on the head or cleaning the scalp with sebum will help prevent hair loss from occurring. Again, neither of these myths is true.
Another popular myth about hair loss is that a person that was bald as a baby will experience hair loss as an adult. In reality, the amount of hair you have on your head when you are born has nothing to do with how much hair you will have when you get older. You also don’t have to worry about wearing a hat because, unless you wear a hat that is exceedingly tight, it is not going to cause you to experience hair loss. It is true that pulling on the hair can have a mild effect on hair loss, but a properly worn hat will not cause this to occur.

In a desperate attempt to prevent hair loss from occurring, some have tried standing on their heads or hanging upside down in order to increase the amount of blood flow the head. While this will increase blood flow, it has no effect on hair loss. Along the same lines, some have thought that massaging the scalp, brushing the hair 100 times each day, or rigorously towel drying the head would stimulate the scalp and help encourage hair growth. This is also untrue. On the other hand, towel drying vigorously does not cause hair loss either.

Another popular myth about hair loss is that cutting the hair causes the hair to grow faster and stronger. While cutting hair does help remove hair that has become slightly thinner as it has grown out, the hair really is not any stronger after it is cut. In addition, this does not speed up the rate of growth nor does it increase the number of follicles that are producing hair.

As with all races, African-Americans have a number of options when it comes to treating hair loss. Methods for combating hair loss in African-Americans range from topical medications such as Rogaine, pills such as Propecia, and hair transplants. While Rogaine and Propecia have both been clinically proven to help some men with combating hair loss, they both need to be taken for the rest of the person’s life in order to remain effective. In addition, the long term effects of these medications is questionable.

Special Considerations When Combating Hair Loss in African-Americans

Although a hair transplant can be a very effective method for combating hair loss in African-Americans, there are several special factors that need to be taken under consideration because certain skin conditions can lead to less-than-desirable results when a hair transplant is performed. One skin problem that is more common in African-Americans and can lead to hair loss is the formation of keloids.Keloids are scars that are irregularly shaped, elevated, and grow uncontrollably. Before undergoing a hair transplant, it is important to discuss this issue with the physician in order to avoid the development of this scarring in the area where the hair follicles are transplanted. It may be necessary to perform a small test procedure in order to make sure the area will heal properly.

African-Americans are also more prone to experience a loss or increase in skin color after undergoing surgery or experiencing an injury. As such, it is important for the physician to perform a thorough investigation into the patient’s family and medial history in order to determine the level of risk for skin discoloration.Often, the discoloration is temporary or can be covered with the help of cosmetics. Before deciding to undergo a hair transplant in response to hair loss, it is important to consider the pros, cons, and risks of discoloration in order to determine if it is the best decision to make.

Ingrown hairs are also more common in African-Americans.When undergoing a transplant in order to combat hair loss in African-Americans, it is possible to develop ingrown hairs.Again, performing a small test procedure can help the physician better evaluate the risk of undergoing this hair loss treatment procedure.

The Hair Advantage When Combating Hair Loss in African-Americans Through Transplants

Despite all of the possible risks associated with the skin, African-Americans have one major benefit when it comes to using transplants to treat hair loss – their hair.African-Americans tend to have curly hair, which makes it appear to be quite dense. As such, transplanting hair follicles to areas that are thinning will have a greater impact on the overall look of the hair.It is, however, necessary to harvest the donor hair in a slightly different way because the follicles tend to have a slight curvature when compared to the scalp.

The methodology behind hair transplants is actually quite simple on the surface, though it takes a great deal of surgical ability and artistic talent for a physician to achieve a natural look. A one day procedure, undergoing a hair transplant only requires a local anesthesia and most patients experience very little discomfort. In fact, many patients take a nap or watch television as the hair transplant procedure takes place.

Prepping for Hair Transplant Surgery

The first step in the hair transplant procedure is to trim the hairs that will be removed and transplanted during the surgery. The remaining hair is gathered and secured out of the way. Next, a local anesthesia is applied to the area.

Gathering Donor Follicles

The next step in the hair transplant is to gather donor follicles from another area of the head. Generally, these follicles are found in the back of the head where the most genetically resistant follicles can be found. The patient’s hair is then combed back over the area where the donor follicles were removed. This hides the sutures, which are removed approximately ten days after the hair transplant surgery is complete.

Prepping the Donor Follicles and the Scalp

After the donor follicles are removed, the tissue is then placed under a microscope in order to be dissected and prepped. As the team of surgical technicians works at prepping the follicles, the physician applies a local anesthesia to the area where the hair is to be transplanted. This area does not need to be shaved beforehand.

Placing the Grafts On the Scalp

In order to place the donor skin grafts onto the scalp, the hair transplant physician must make small incisions in the area where the hair will be placed. These incisions are made in irregular patterns so they will look the same as naturally-occurring hair patterns. The grafts are then placed into these incisions. When complete, the patient will have received hundreds of new grafts that will continue to grow as they would have grown if they were left in their original location. As long as the transplanted hair follicles continue to grow, the patient will experience hair growth in the area that was previously bald. Therefore, a hair transplant is usually a lifelong solution to hair loss.
