While the concept of hair replacement is relatively simple, the process is more complicated than many people may realize. In fact, it takes a highly talented physician to complete a transplant and to create a natural appearance. Still, regardless of who you are and how much balding has taken place, the following 5-step procedure is what happens during hair replacement surgery.
Step #1: Local Anesthesia is Applied to the Area
The first step in hair replacement surgery involves applying local anesthesia to the area. While this numbs the area, the patient still remains awake throughout the procedure. As such, many patients watch television or simply take a nap during the procedure.
Step #2: Gather the Donor Hairs
The next step is to trim the donor hairs and to remove them from the scalp. Generally, the donor follicles are found in the back of the head. After they are removed, the incisions are sutured and the hair is combed back over the area. These sutures remain in place for approximately ten days following the procedure.
Step #3: Prep the Follicles
The third step in the process involves placing the donor tissue under a microscope and dissecting the follicles. This step is performed by a team of surgical technicians who tend to this task while the physician preps the scalp for the next two steps.
Step #4: Make Incisions in the Scalp
During the fourth step, the physician makes small incisions in an irregular pattern throughout the scalp. By making the incisions in an irregular pattern, it creates a more natural appearance.
Step #5: Insert the Grafts
Finally, the donor grafts are inserted into the incisions. By the time the procedure is complete, the patient will receive hundreds of new grafts. Each of the follicles that were transplanted will continue to grow in the same way they would if they had been left in their original place.
